Nine Teams in Willoughby Pub Quiz
Thirty six players made up nine teams that had turned up to take part in Quiz Night at the Willoughby Arms.
Lots of regular quizzers with one or two new faces; HMG made up of three archaeologists, popped into the pub on Monday saw the flyer for the quiz and came back to play; which just shows that it pays to advertise.
Fireworks made up the picture round; the old fashioned type like from years gone by, jumping jack, roman candle, not forgetting the (now banned) banger.
The music round, tenuously linked to bonfire night went down well, not so many moans and groans – Jumping Jack Flash, Boom Bang-a-Bang, Rocket Man, We Didn’t Start The Fire, not forgetting Something’s Burning by Kenny Rogers.
Weird Fish were down to two players this month, Lone Ranger and Tonto also two players sat not too far away, I wonder how they would have done if they had joined forces for the evening?
In fourth place were United Staits with 131, third place Buffer Stops with 133, in second HMG with 138 but congratulations this month go to Please Repeat the Question with 141 points.
The Christmas Quiz – slightly different format, not so many questions, with
bonus points for santa hats or Christmas fancy dress. Tuesday 11th December.
Willoughby Pub Quiz : 9 Oct 2012
The posters were up, flyers on the tables and the regular players were notified of the date a few weeks ago by email but was anyone going to turn up??
Tuesday 9th October 2012, the first quiz of the season took place at the Willoughby Arms, Little Bytham, we had seven teams with a total of 35 quizzers. One of the teams turned up the previous week convinced that they had the right Tuesday evening – it’s ok Ian we won’t tell anyone!!
Along with the regular players there were some new faces, I hope we didn’t go to quickly for you and that you’ll come and join us again.
With summer done and dusted the music round didn’t bring the usual moans and groans; the clue – the word hot was in the title of the song or the artistes name. A rare mix including You Sexy Thing, Hot Stuff, Snoopy versus the Red Baron, Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip, plus Girls Aloud, something for all ages more or less. The picture round was road traffic signs (nothing out of the ordinary, you might think) but we made sure we had an up to date copy of the Highway Code just in case anyone disagreed with the answers.
The final scores ranged from 78 to 137, in third place were United Staits with 123 point, followed by Haven’t Started Yet with 125 point but congratulations this month go to Big Pig who were the winners with 137 points.
To raise funds for the Alan Wood Memorial Garden, we had a raffle which included a bottle of Bells Special Reserve Malt Whisky donated by Chris Moxom, a Meerkat donated by Bub, some notelets donated by Marc from the Weird Fish team plus eight other prizes donated by the producton team including cosmetics, Thorntons fudge and daffodil bulbs.
Kip added the quiz entry fees to the fund so with raffle ticket sales and Duncan giving an extra donation to round the money up, we ended the evening having raised £100.
A special thank you to all who helped make the evening a success, by coming along and taking part, buying raffle tickets or donating prizes. To Kip for the use of the pub and Bub for keeping the drinks flowing.
We couldn’t have done it without you.
The next quiz will be on Tuesday 6th November.
Willoughby Arms Pub Quiz – Last One of the Season : 1 May 2012
From Caroline Holmes …
What a great way to end the season, nine teams of quizzers all set to test their brain power.
Team sizes varied Buffer Stops are regulars and newcomers Team Titanic weren’t really sure what to expect, United Staits (the Stait family)and My Blue Heaven who change their name every month depending on what’s going on in the world. Weird Fish (other clothing brands are available), Universally Challenged (kids home from uni) Fish and Chips (guess what they were eating), Famous 5 (usually have a different name but haven’t been for a while). Not forgetting We’re only here for the music round.
The picture round was a bit of a grueller – 10 cathedrals from around the country. The question rounds featured gardening, films and entertainment to the Olympics something for everyone.
Not forgetting the music round, we’ve had some good rounds this season, two tracks being played simultaneously, music through the decades not forgetting Cliff Richard, so what could we end the season with? As I announced the theme Musicals, there were a lot of happy faces, we started with Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Top Hat and The Lion King to name a few with lots of people singing along to the music.
For a bit of fun to end the evening, we had a game of Irish bingo, for those of you who don’t know how to play, you start off standing up if a number gets called that’s on your ticket you’re out. The last one standing is the winner. The prize for this went to Mary.
As for the quiz, three teams score 118, Fish and Chips 132, My Blue Heaven 135 and winners this month were Famous 5 with 141 points.
I have an apology for last month, I gave Zoe the credit for Sheila’s fantastic birthday cake but it was actually Laura Stait who made the cake. (so talented)
